Overview

Wow!  The Mansard Trail in Kanab, Utah, with its petroglyphs and beauty is an amazing surprise!  We actually took this hike because we were packing up from a week in Kanab and wanted to get in one more short hike near town.  What we discovered was a hike everyone should put on their list while visiting the Kanab area.

Overall, the hike is pretty moderate.  Don’t let the main picture above concern you, the climb is only 8 feet on very stable rocks.  I know it looks a lot bigger, which is why I love the picture, but the climb should be doable for most people with moderate hiking skills.

The trail is well worn and easy to follow.  Despite the 1,347′ elevation gain I recorded on Gaiagps (follow link for a 5% discount on app purchase) the hike up is not difficult and the scenery is quite pretty with an abundance of red rock and interesting sites along the way.  It is also suitable for dogs, although you will have to help your dog up the 8′ rock climb, unless yours is a billy goat like ours.

The beauty of the trail is just a bonus on this hike, however.  The big pay-off is when you reach the petroglyphs in the grotto at trail’s end.  They are fascinating and fairly extensive.  Please be sure not to walk on any of the petroglyphs as it will damage them.  Also make sure to heed the warnings posted at the site.  It is monitored by camera and infractions result in costly fines.

After you enjoy the petroglyphs and the view below from the grotto, it is an easy hike back down to the trailhead.  This is not a long hike (easily accomplished in under 2 hours), but it holds a big pay-off.  If you are in the Kanab area, I highly recommend you take a couple of hours and hike the Mansard Trail.
