HIKING:  WHY IN STATE PARKS AND OTHER MUNICIPAL LANDS?

Urbanization has increasingly removed access to nature for many people.  Because of this urbanization, state parks and other state lands have become increasingly popular places for hiking.

  • HELP LOCAL ECONOMIES

Hikers typically shop or dine locally when visiting these parks.  Consequently, they provide an economic boost to state and local communities.  In addition, these parks attract new businesses.  Those focused on outfitting hikers often consider locations near parks that attract their customers.  Others with quality of life criteria look for areas with easy to access recreation, nature, and open spaces.  Subsequently, hiking in these places helps creates jobs, and that is a boost to state and local communities.

  • PRESERVE ECOSYSTEMS

These parks support the conservation of ecosystems for future generations.  For example, as more adults enjoy hiking, they discover these special places, and they bring their kids and grand kids.  Accordingly, they not only preserve now, they help us teach future generations about conservation.  Through exposure and experience, we and they connect with these lands, and the importance of preservation and conservation become meaningful.

  • AFFORDABILITY

Finally, hiking in state and other municipal parks is affordable.  Some, but not all of these parks charge fees for park access.  In these cases annual pass as well as day pass options are typically available.  All such fees are typically minimal and are used to support the park.

HIKING:  WHERE ARE THE STATE PARKS AND OTHER MUNICIPAL LANDS?
