BACKPACKING IN STATE PARKS AND OTHER MUNICIPAL LANDS

Urbanization has increasingly removed access to nature for many people.  Because of this urbanization, state parks, in particular, have become popular places to go backpacking.

Backpacking Provides an Economic Boost to State and Local Economies

Backpackers typically shop or dine locally when visiting state and parks.  When they do, their spending supports local businesses.  It also creates additional business opportunities.  In fact, some small communities have grown because of businesses focused on catering to backpackers and other user groups.  In short, backpacking in these places helps creates jobs, and that is an economic boost to state and local communities.

Backpackers Help Preserve Ecosystems

These parks support the conservation of ecosystems for future generations.  As more adults enjoy backpacking, they discover these parks, and they bring their kids to show them the unique wonders they hold.  Accordingly, these lands not only help us connect with nature, they preserve ecosystems which might otherwise be lost because no one cares to protect them.  Thus through exposure and experience, backpacking helps preserve ecosystems because conservation becomes personally meaningful.

Backpacking Supports Affordable Fun

Finally, backpacking in state parks is affordable.  In addition to camping fees for backcountry sites or permits for use, some charge separately for park access.  In these cases annual pass as well as day pass options are typically available.  All such fees are typically minimal and are used to support the park.

How to Find the Trails

State parks exist in all 50 states.  State parks administer over 10,000 different areas which include state parks, state recreational areas, reserves, beaches and historic sites in the United States.  In addition to state administered park lands, some other county and municipal parks may provide further opportunities for excellent backpacking OUTventures.
