We outventure to help you outventure!
For us, outventuring isn’t just about adventure. It’s about the quiet moments — the first light on a ridgeline, the sound of a creek at camp, the shared laughter when the trail gets spicy. We believe the outdoors enriches people’s lives, and we want to help more folks experience that connection. Learn more about us HERE.
The gear we bring on a day hike plays a huge role in how safe, comfortable, and enjoyable our time on trail will be. As with most things, everyone has their own idea of what makes something the “best.” For us, “best” is a balance of function, durability, comfort, and price. Even so, some pieces of equipment truly stand out.
When Mac and I choose our hiking gear, we look for items that fit the way we actually move through the outdoors — reliable, well‑designed, and suited to the terrain and conditions we explore. We share our current equipment here because these are the pieces we trust – based on our experiences over real miles and real use.
Gear evolves, and so do we. As new innovations come along or our needs shift, we update what we use. What follows is the gear we’re using right now for day hiking — the equipment that helps us stay comfortable, prepared, and ready for whatever the trail brings.
Please Note: Grey Otter Outventures, Inc. is an affiliate of some of the brands mentioned in this section and may receive a small commission from purchases made from these brands at no extra cost to you.
Backpacks: We are big fans of Osprey backpacks. They are well constructed and can hold up to years of hiking abuse. The daypacks we use are the Osprey Talon 22 (men) and the Osprey Tempest 20 (women). Both are light weight with an excellent harness system and plenty of storage.
